Google Search Console for Instagram: What Every Business Should Know

Google Search Console Instagram is something new!

Google Search Console has always been one of my favourite tools.

It tells you how your website performs on Google Search, which pages attract visitors, what people search for before clicking your content and where opportunities exist to improve visibility.

For years, one thing remained constant.

Search Console was built around websites.

That has changed.

Google has introduced Platform Properties, allowing creators and businesses to add supported social platforms including Instagram as properties inside Google Search Console. Instead of only monitoring a website, you can now understand how your Instagram content performs across Google’s own search ecosystem.

At first glance, it feels like another feature update.

I don’t think that’s what it is.

I think this is one of the strongest signals Google has given us about the future of search.

Google Search Console Instagram

Google Is No Longer Thinking Only About Websites

For years, SEO has been centred around one goal:

Get your website ranking.

That strategy still matters.

But look at how people consume content today.

Someone might discover a healthcare tip on Instagram.

Watch a lawyer explain a legal process on YouTube.

Read a discussion on X.

Ask ChatGPT a question.

Then finally visit a company’s website.

The customer journey isn’t website-first anymore.

It’s content-first.

Google knows this.

That’s why Search has gradually started surfacing Instagram posts, YouTube Shorts, TikTok videos and creator content more frequently over the past few years.

Platform Properties are simply the next logical step.

Instead of treating websites as the only measurable asset, Google is beginning to recognise your entire digital presence.

What Are Platform Properties?

Platform Properties are a new property type inside Google Search Console.

Instead of verifying a website domain, you can now verify supported social platforms directly.

Currently, Google supports:

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • X (formerly Twitter)

Each account becomes its own Search Console property with dedicated reporting.

That means your website and your Instagram account can now be analysed separately while still living inside the same Search Console account.

For marketers, agencies and business owners, that’s a significant shift.

What Can You Actually See?

One misconception I’ve already noticed is that people think Google is replacing Instagram Insights.

It isn’t.

Instagram Insights tells you how your content performs inside Instagram.

Search Console tells you how that same content performs inside Google Search.

That’s an important distinction.

Once your Instagram account is connected, Search Console can report metrics such as:

  • Clicks from Google Search
  • Impressions
  • Average CTR
  • Search position
  • Top-performing posts
  • Search queries that led users to your content
  • Traffic trends through Search, and where applicable, News and Discover

That’s data Instagram itself doesn’t provide because it’s outside Instagram’s own ecosystem.

Why This Matters More Than Most People Think

Many marketers will look at this update and say:

“Nice feature.”

I think they’re missing the bigger picture.

Google didn’t need to build this.

Yet it did.

Why?

Because the way people search has changed.

People don’t always start with websites anymore.

Sometimes they search specifically for creators.

Sometimes Google decides an Instagram Reel answers a question better than a traditional article.

Sometimes a YouTube Short is the most useful result.

Search is becoming increasingly multi-format.

This feature acknowledges that reality.

It’s Google’s way of saying:

“Your online presence is bigger than your website.”

The Shift Businesses Should Pay Attention To

For years, businesses separated their marketing into different boxes.

SEO.

Social media.

Content.

Video.

Paid advertising.

Each channel had different reports.

Different KPIs.

Different teams.

Platform Properties begin breaking down those walls.

Instead of asking:

“How is Instagram performing?”

You can now ask:

“How is Instagram performing in Google Search?”

Those are two completely different questions.

And the second one could become far more important over the next few years.

Why Businesses Should Care (Even If You’re Not an SEO)

If you own a business, this update isn’t just for marketers.

It’s about understanding where your customers discover your content before they ever visit your website.

For years, businesses treated Instagram as a platform for engagement.

Likes.

Comments.

Shares.

Follower growth.

Those metrics still matter, but they don’t tell the whole story.

Imagine you publish a Reel explaining the signs of gum disease if you’re a dental clinic.

Or a short legal tip if you’re a law firm.

Or a product demonstration if you’re a manufacturer.

If someone discovers that content through Google Search rather than Instagram, that’s a completely different acquisition channel.

Without Search Console, you might never know it happened.

That’s why Platform Properties matter.

They help businesses understand how social content contributes to search visibility.

SEO and Social Media Are Finally Starting to Merge

For years, marketers have debated one question.

Does social media help SEO?

The answer has never been straightforward.

Social signals themselves aren’t direct ranking factors.

But social content absolutely influences discovery, brand awareness, backlinks and user behaviour.

This latest update pushes those worlds even closer together.

Instead of thinking about SEO and Instagram as separate marketing activities, businesses can start viewing them as parts of the same content ecosystem.

Think about it.

A customer might:

  • Find your Instagram Reel through Google.
  • Visit your profile.
  • Click your website.
  • Read a blog.
  • Book a consultation.

That’s one customer journey.

Not four different marketing channels.

What This Means for Content Strategy

If you’re still creating completely different content for your website and Instagram, this update should make you reconsider.

Instead of asking:

“What should I post on Instagram today?”

Ask:

“What questions are my customers asking that deserve to exist everywhere?”

Let’s say you’re an orthodontic clinic.

One question people search every day is:

“How long do braces take?”

That single topic can become:

  • A detailed blog article.
  • A carousel post.
  • A Reel.
  • A YouTube Short.
  • A LinkedIn post.
  • A newsletter.
  • A Google Business Profile update.

You’re not creating seven different ideas.

You’re creating one valuable piece of knowledge and adapting it for different platforms.

That’s a much smarter approach to content marketing.

I Think This Is Google’s Biggest Message

Most people are focusing on Instagram.

I’m focusing on Google’s intention.

Google isn’t trying to become Instagram.

It’s trying to understand expertise wherever it exists.

That’s a significant difference.

For years, Google’s mission has been to organise the world’s information.

Today, information doesn’t only live on websites.

It lives on:

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Reddit
  • Podcasts
  • Creator platforms

Platform Properties suggest Google wants better visibility into those ecosystems rather than pretending websites are the only source of useful content.

What About AI Search?

This is where things become really interesting.

Large Language Models don’t think like traditional search engines.

They don’t only look at websites.

They learn from information published across multiple trusted sources.

That means your digital presence is becoming increasingly important.

A business that consistently publishes useful content across:

  • Its website
  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • Google Business Profile
  • LinkedIn

is building far stronger digital authority than a business relying on a website alone.

Whether you’re thinking about ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini or Perplexity, the trend is the same.

The businesses that demonstrate expertise across multiple platforms are becoming easier to understand, reference and recommend.

While Google hasn’t said Platform Properties are designed for AI systems, they fit the broader direction of search: understanding creators, brands and content wherever they publish.

5 Things I’d Do Immediately

If you manage a business or create content regularly, here’s what I’d recommend.

1. Add Your Instagram Property

If the feature is available in your account, connect your Instagram profile to Google Search Console as early as possible.

The sooner you start collecting data, the sooner you’ll understand how your content performs in Google Search.

2. Compare Search Queries

Pay attention to the searches bringing people to your website.

Then compare them with the searches leading people to your Instagram content.

You may discover topics worth expanding into blog articles or videos.

3. Create Content Around Questions

Instead of chasing trends every week, focus on answering the questions your customers ask repeatedly.

Those topics often perform well across search engines and social platforms alike.

4. Repurpose Your Best Content

If one Instagram Reel performs exceptionally well, don’t stop there.

Turn it into:

  • A blog article.
  • A LinkedIn post.
  • A YouTube video.
  • A downloadable guide.
  • An email newsletter.

Great ideas deserve more than one format.

5. Measure Beyond Likes

Likes don’t pay the bills.

Business growth does.

Start paying attention to visibility, search behaviour, website visits and enquiries—not just engagement metrics.

Those numbers are far more valuable over the long term.

Common Misconceptions

Let’s clear up a few things.

❌ Google isn’t indexing every Instagram post.

Only content Google chooses to surface in search results will generate Search Console data.

❌ This doesn’t replace Instagram Insights.

Instagram Insights measures activity within Instagram.

Google Search Console measures performance within Google’s ecosystem.

Both tools answer different questions.

❌ This isn’t only useful for influencers.

Healthcare clinics.

Law firms.

Manufacturers.

Local businesses.

Consultants.

E-commerce brands.

Anyone creating useful content can benefit from understanding how it’s discovered through Google.

One Prediction

I don’t think Platform Properties are the end of this story.

I think they’re the beginning.

Over the next few years, I expect Google to place even greater emphasis on understanding creators, businesses and brands across multiple platforms—not just through their websites.

If that happens, the businesses that build authority everywhere will have a significant advantage over those relying on a single channel.

The future of search isn’t website versus social media.

It’s an ecosystem where every piece of helpful content strengthens your brand.

Old SEO vs The New Search Reality

One way to understand this update is to compare how search has evolved.

Traditional SEOModern Search Ecosystem
Focused almost entirely on websitesIncludes websites, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit and AI platforms
Success measured by website rankingsSuccess measured by overall brand visibility
Search journey usually started on GoogleSearch journeys now start across multiple platforms
SEO and social media managed separatelyContent increasingly supports both search and social discovery
Google understood domainsGoogle is learning to understand brands, creators and entities

Should You Add Your Instagram to Google Search Console?

Absolutely.

Even if you don’t receive thousands of visitors from Google today.

The reason isn’t today’s data.

It’s tomorrow’s opportunities.

Search Console has always been one of the best free tools available to marketers because it shows how Google understands your content.

Now it’s beginning to show how Google understands your brand beyond your website.

That’s valuable insight whether you’re a solo consultant, a law firm, a healthcare clinic or a global business.

My Take

I’ve been working in digital marketing for more than a decade, and every few years we see an update that looks small on the surface but signals something much bigger underneath.

I believe Platform Properties are one of those updates.

Not because they’re going to transform your rankings overnight.

Not because they’ll suddenly double your website traffic.

But because they reveal where search is heading.

Google is no longer trying to understand websites.

It’s trying to understand brands.

Brands that publish helpful content consistently.

Brands that educate.

Brands that earn trust.

And brands that exist across multiple platforms—not just one domain.

That’s a very different way of thinking about SEO.

It’s also why I believe the future belongs to businesses that stop asking:

“How do I rank my website?”

and start asking:

“How do I become the most trusted source of information in my industry?”

The second question naturally leads to the first.

In a nutshell

The biggest mistake businesses could make is treating this as just another Search Console feature.

It’s much more than that.

For years, websites were the centre of online visibility.

Today, they’re one part of a much larger ecosystem.

People discover businesses through articles, videos, podcasts, social media and AI assistants before they ever visit a homepage.

Google’s Platform Properties acknowledge that reality.

Whether you’re creating educational Reels, publishing YouTube Shorts or building a personal brand on Instagram, understanding how that content performs in Google Search is becoming increasingly important.

The businesses that win over the next few years won’t necessarily publish more content.

They’ll publish better content, distribute it across multiple platforms and understand how each channel contributes to the customer journey.

That’s the real story behind this update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add any Instagram account to Google Search Console?

No. Google is rolling out Platform Properties for supported accounts. Availability may vary depending on your account and region.

Does this replace Instagram Insights?

No.

Instagram Insights measures engagement within Instagram.

Google Search Console measures how your Instagram content performs across Google’s search ecosystem.

You’ll need both tools to get the full picture.

Will my Instagram posts rank on Google?

Some public Instagram content can appear in Google Search, but not every post will be indexed or shown. Search Console helps you understand the performance of the content Google does surface.

Does this improve SEO?

Adding your Instagram property won’t directly improve rankings.

However, understanding how your content is discovered can help you refine your content strategy and identify new opportunities.

Who should use Platform Properties?

Any business or creator producing valuable content online, including:

  • Healthcare clinics
  • Law firms
  • Consultants
  • Agencies
  • E-commerce brands
  • Manufacturers
  • Personal brands

Is this useful if I already have a website?

Yes.

Your website and Instagram now contribute to your overall digital presence.

Looking at both together can help you understand how customers discover your brand.

Is Google moving beyond traditional SEO?

Google still relies heavily on websites, but this update reflects a broader shift toward understanding content across multiple platforms.
